DUKE ELLINGTON – A FREEMASON

DUKE ELLINGTON - A FREEMASON
Duke Ellington (1899-1974)

American pianist, bandleader, composer and jazz arranger. Creator of film music, among others. Ellington embraced the phrase “beyond category” as a liberating principle, and referred to his music as part of the more general category of American Music, rather than to a musical genre such as jazz.

Initiated in “Social Lodge No. 1”, Washington, D. C., PHA in 1932.  Became a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Shrine.
