Of the thousands of people who come to the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple each year, far fewer ever get to a room on the third floor reserved for one purpose. It was designed to be both rectangular and tucked away for privacy. It’s lined with pews on the long walls and thronelike chairs on the ends. On Monday, a low altar flanked by pillar candlesticks was in the center. Called Snyder Hall, it is around the corner from a sign forbidding any but Masons and their guests.

Theater audiences and wedding guests might not know the Masons still meet there. It was the Masons who built the massive stone building at 420 N. Washington Ave. and dedicated it in 1930. The building was always intended to be used by…
