The Times: ‘Dull’ masons in Scotland try to carve out more exciting future

Their clandestine rules and rituals have long provoked fascination and speculation, but it has emerged that younger Freemasons are abandoning lodges after finding that gatherings are actually “dull and repetitive”.

Since it was formally constituted in 1736 the Grand Lodge of Scotland has shrouded itself in mystery and jealously guarded its unique handshakes, known as grips, and theatrical initiation ceremonies.

In his new year address Ramsay McGhee, the grand master mason, warned that radical changes are needed to ensure the long-term survival of “the craft”.

He encouraged lodges to provide “a sense of excitement” to prevent newcomers from voting with their feet. He said that “2023 will continue to present challenges at all levels of our organisation”. “There is a need for change within…
